FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS
Q:
Are you a 501c3 non-profit corporation?
A:
Nope. We are not incorporated at all. We work as freelance videomakers.
Or, as far as the IRS is concerned, we are "self-employed."
Q:
Who do you serve?
A:
We have done work for artists, nonprofits, public agencies, and
small businesses. We are specifically interested in work that helps
advance community building and social justice in Maine.
Q:
What do you mean when you say your work is sliding scale?
A:
Sliding scale means our fee for each project is adjusted to meet
the needs and resources of the client.
Q:
What is the process of determining the scale?
A:
Usually, the client approaches us with a project in mind. Based
upon the client's description, we write a budget for the "commercial
rate" of such a project. Then we discuss with the client how
to make our services more affordable either through discounts or
shrinking the scope of the project.
Q:
So, what is the "commercial rate?"
A:
If you have a project in mind, email
us about it. We'll discuss prices once we have an idea of what
you want to accomplish.
Q:
If my organization has no money, does that mean you will do work
for free?
A:
We have done work for little or no pay. But it depends on the mission
and the time commitment of the project.
Q:
Wow! Is this your primary job? How are you alive?
A:
Yes, we are full-time professional videomakers. We try to balance
our discounted/volunteer work with the commercial-rate work so that
we can sustain our business. We give as much of our time and energy
as we can to our clients, and we hope that they will compensate
us as fairly as possible. In the end, hopefully, more videos get
made and everyone is happy.
Q:
Is your sliding scale undercutting the work of other Maine videomakers?
A:
No. We have never competed or out-bid other Maine videomakers for
the same job. We usually are doing video projects for small groups
or individuals that would not be done otherwise if it weren't for
the convenience of our services. If and when we work for large employers,
we charge a normal commercial rate.
Q:
Why do you live in Lewiston?
A:
Because we think it's a great place to be. The people are friendly
and the community is supportive. Much of our volunteer work is towards
community building in Lewiston and the greater area of Central Maine.
